The Rev Florence Li Tim-Oi was the first Anglican woman priest. In January 1944 she was ordained by Bishop R. O. Hall of Hong Kong for ministry in the Portugese colony of Macau. She had received her theological education in Canton from the Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Allen, later Bishop of Derby, who retired to live at The Knowle, Philcote Street, Deddington from 1969 until his death in 1982.
The Li Tim-Oi Foundation exists to carry on her ministry by enabling women in the Two-Thirds World to train for Christian work in their own countries. In the nine years since its launch on the 50th anniversary of that first ordination, the Foundation has given grants to over 300 women in 116 dioceses in 16 provinces of the Anglican Communion. They are trained for a wide variety of vocational roles, lay and ordained. The present patrons are the Archbishops of Canterbury and of Kenya and of The Congo, the Rt Rev Victoria Matthews of Christchurch NZ, Baroness Perry of Southwark, the Rt Rev K.H.Ting and Mrs Jane Williams.
Lord Coggan and Lord Runcie were patrons until their deaths. The present patrons are the Archbishop of Canterbury and of The Sudan, the Rt. Rev. Penelope Jamieson of Dunedin and the Rt. Rev. K. H. Ting.
