From the Deddington News - August 2010
In the past two months I have covered entries for the vegetable and flower sections.
This month it’s the turn of crafts. The cookery section has proved popular in the past and we hope for a similar response this year.
There are sections for jam (soft and stoned fruit), jelly, marmalade and chutney. The cake section includes a Victoria sponge, a fruit cake, scones, bread rolls, biscuits and shortbread. There is also an entry for a quiche and new this year for the boys a men-only cake, so all you budding Jamie Olivers, now is your chance! Also new this year is a category for six hen’s eggs for those of you with chickens.
The arts section this year will feature photography with photos of a garden, plant or flower, a creature (animal, bird, insect etc), a building and a water scene.
In the painting section there are classes for a watercolour landscape, a painting of a flower or plant and a still life with fruit or veg.
The craft section will include items of cross-stitch, a hand-knitted adult garment, a hand-knitted accessory and a soft toy.
Once again, there will be a large section for children with age groups for 5 and under, 6–9 years, and 10–15.
There are ten classes for each age group with entries such as: (under-5s) pictures and models of subjects such as a monster, my house, a creature made of vegetables and a decorated biscuit; (6–9s) a photograph of a pet, a collage of paper or fabric, a junk model and a paper aeroplane, a castle made from boxes and four decorated fairly cakes; (10–15s) a photo of a pet, a soft toy, a drawing or painting of a country scene, a person made from vegetables and six sweets/fudge/chocolates. The full list of categories is on the entry form which will be available from sites around Deddington. So with six weeks of school holidays before the show there are plenty of opportunities to keep your children occupied. Also new this year is a limerick with the first line to be ‘A Deddington woman called …’.
Have some fun with that one! We hope you will enjoy the summer and spend a little time working on your entries. Enjoy yourself preparing and have a great day with your friends on show day. Hope to see you all there on the day.

DEDDINGTON PARISH SHOW 2010 - updated 2nd July
|
This year's annual Parish Show is on SATURDAY 4th SEPTEMBER in Deddington Parish Church.
All the members of the organising committee were very much encouraged by the success of last year's Show and, of course, hope for an even better one this year. We hope more children will enter and we have altered the age groups slightly - but we rely on parents' encouragement and willingness to prepare for the children's classes in the Show. At least half the Show is to do with growing plants - vegetables, fruit and flowers, so hopefully, even with the drought we are currently having, you will have some potential exhibits you can nurture ready for 4th September. There are some new classes in the Arts & Crafts Section, including a limerick (Class 71). You do not have to be a poet to make up a limerick! As we had 199 photographs last year, we have taken pity on the judge and have limited each exhibitor to one photo only, but we now have 5 photo classes plus two for children, so get snapping! The full Show programme is now ready and you can find some in Deddington Parish Church porch, in the Deddington Co-op, in the Flower Shop or by phoning 01869 338082. Deddington Parish Show 2010
Deddington Parish Show will take place this year on 4 September. Once again the show committee is encouraging you to participate. There are categories for everyone to enter including vegetables, fruit, flowers, baking, art, photography, and children’s art and crafts.
This month we would like you to start planning your entries for the flower section. This includes opportunities for everyone with classes including garden flowers, pot grown flowers, foliage plants, cactus, house plants and flower arrangements. This was one of the most popular sections in last year’s show and we hope we can repeat that performance this year.
It would be fair to say everyone has a rose or pot of flowers somewhere in the garden which can be nurtured for the show without too much trouble. Even those without a garden have the opportunity to enter the houseplant classes which include a pelargonium, a foliage plant, a flowering houseplant and a cactus.
Last year’s flower arrangement in an unusual container was hugely popular and produced some stunning entries and we are hoping for a similar response for this year.
New for 2010 is a class for two sunflowers, which is a great opportunity for adults and children to get the seeds out and get growing.
Sections include a single rose and four stems of roses. Three dahlias in cactus, pompon and flat varieties, three chrysanthemums, two sprays of fuchsias, four stems of any annual and six stems of any flower.
Judging will be done by outside independent judges who will be looking for flower formation, freshness, condition of the flowers/leaves, size and colour in that order. Where more than one specimen of the same variety is required, the uniformity will come into play.

Deddington Parish Show 2010
This year's annual Parish Show is on SATURDAY 4th SEPTEMBER in Deddington Parish Church.
All the members of the organising committee were very much encouraged by the success of last year's Show and, of course, hope for an even better one this year.
We hope more children will enter and we intend to revamp the children's classes a little, learning by the experience of the last two years, consulting parents and children for ideas and trying to motivate more children to show their creative skills - but inevitably it boils down to parents' encouragement and willingness. Preparing for the Show makes excellent, worthwhile half-term and holiday occupation for children!
At least half the Show is to do with growing plants - vegetables, fruit and flowers - and winter and early spring is the time to begin thinking what you might grow in your garden, allotment, pots or window-boxes. We are increasingly being encouraged to grow our own produce for the reasons of economy, health and cutting down carbon emissions, so, hopefully, some of this effort could be entered for our Show.
The Committee will be meeting in March and a revised list of classes will then be added to this and will be included as an insert in the April issue of the Deddington News, so hopefully we will reach most people.
We hope you will be interested and support the 2010 Show.
