What was The LIVING Rooms Project?
The LIVING Rooms Project was Deddington Church’s major fundraising effort in 2003 - 2006. The money was used to part fund the new room at the back of the church and to support The Church of the Resurrection, Mmabatho, South Africa work against HIV/AIDS. We have completed the church room here with the addition of some very generous donations.
Nearly £30,000 was sent to South Africa. This was used to part fund the building of a new church so that the old church could be developed into an AIDS centre. This is now known as The TSOGO Home Care Project.
The background
The problem of HIV/AIDS is South Africa is considerable with 5.5 million of the population believed to be infected; this includes 250,000 children. The problem does not end here.
When parents die it is often one of the grandparents or the eldest child that has to look after the younger children. This often means that the older children miss out on education and other opportunities.
The Church of the Resurection in Mmabatho, South Africa is developing an ambitious project to help children infected and affected with AIDS/HIV.
The project
The old church will be converted into a centre to support up to 100 young children. The centre will become about 30 metres by 30 metres, nearly half the size of our church in Deddington! Day care will be provided for the youngest children so their older siblings can go to school.
The Tsogo Project has been awarded NGO status by the Department of Social Welfare giving them access to training and support in their work with HIV/AIDS.
Like all projects of this size it will be carried out in stages.

The funding
The first £10,000 of the money we have sent has been used to develop the new church to speed up the release of the old church for the HIV/AIDS centre. The remaining £19,000 is being used to develop the old church as Phase 1 of the project. Any balance will be used fund the subsequent phases.
Over the next few years much of The Church of the Resurrection's fund raising will be channelled into developing the Tsogo Project and it is hoped we can and will continue to support them with prayers and funding.
Phase 1
The first phase of the Tsogo Project was to convert the existing church into a more manageable space for the first 30 children. This is shown on the drawing outlined in red. The individual rooms are designed so that they can be easily utilised during this first phase as well as maintain their usefulness in subsequent phases. The drawing shows their ultimate use as offices.
The conversion is now complete and work will begin to start providing love and nurturing for these children as well as a balanced diet for breakfast and lunch.
Subsequent Phases
Developing the remaining phases of the Tsogo Project will depend on fundraising in South Africa and here. There is no shortage of children needing the support of the Tsogo Project.
The planned development of the project is shown in the rest of the drawing. Planning permission has been applied for this and it is hoped it will be granted soon.
When complete The Tsogo Project will have a small but significant impact on the HIV/AIDS problem in South Africa and a major impact on the families it supports.
