We start our 10th anniversary season on 12 September. The Society exists, among other things, to foster interest in the history and archaeology of this area. Our regular lecture series, held at the Windmill Centre on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm, furthers that aim by covering a wide range of topics. In addition, various members are engaged in detailed research of particular topics. Best known is probably the family history research group led by Moira Byast. The group is about to further its researches by studying local wills and inventories of the 16th – 19th centuries. Anyone is welcome to participate.

Our programme for 2007-8, and for the start of 2008-9, is below:

September 12th: Carl Boardman, ‘Life on the Inside’
October 10th: Hugh Hinde, ‘Duelling’
November 14th: Barry Davis, ‘History of the Christmas Card’
December 12th: We shall recreate a ‘typical’ Christmas of 1942
January 9th: Martin Way, ‘The Golden Age of Coaching’
February 13th: George Hook, ‘Button Making’
March 12th: Rob Parkinson, ‘Oxfordshire Village Surveys’
April 9th: Andy Norton, ‘The Archaeology of Oxford Castle’
May 14th: Deborah Hayter, ‘Avon Dassett’
June 11th: Evening visit and picnic at Burton Dassett Country Park
September 10th: Florence Cross, ‘History of the use of Straw’
October 8th: Tony Yelloly, ‘History of the Quakers in this area’
November 12th: Dr Joanne Bailey, ‘Marriage in Georgian England’

All our meetings (except June 11th) are at the Windmill Centre from 7.30. All are welcome. Membership for the whole season £18 couples, £10 singles, or £2.50 at the door.
