SUMMARY:Ukraine Solidarity Jazz Band - Driving Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:DRIVING UKRAINE\nDeddingtonian Fynn Watt\, rally-cross competitor\, has channelled his passion for motorsport into a life-saving mission. After the war started in April 2022\, he founded DrivingUkraine\, a charity whose the mission would be to deliver aid and essential supplies to medical teams on Ukraine’s frontline. Fynn explains\, ‘at the start of the war\, I couldn’t just stand by and watch’\, and within 2 weeks he was driving a van of supplies to Ukraine. That mission has grown into the delivery of more than 224 vehicles\, 44 convoys and over £1.5M+ fundraised! Every month 7 or 8 refurbished vehicles\, including fully equipped ambulances\, leave Deddington and are driven to Ukraine by local volunteers. They are handed over to volunteer medics and paramedics\, humanitarian bomb-disposal teams\, combat medics\, Ukrainian hospitals\, and others. \nUKRAINE SOLIDARITY JAZZ BAND\nUkraine Solidarity Jazz Band was formed in January 2023 by jazz musicians in Berkshire and Oxfordshire – vocalists Fleur Stevenson\, Katrina Likhtman\, and Steve Foster\, pianist Maff Potts\, guitarist Robert Otwinowski\, drummer Ben Robins\, Kyrill Avilov on the saxophone he brought with him into exile after the invasion\, and Deddington’s own Steve Kershaw on bass. The Band’s mission is to stand with Ukrainian people\, to fundraise for Ukraine related projects\, to help people stay connected during these difficult times\, to bring a message of love and celebrate camaraderie between British and Ukrainian people through music.\nJoin us in the stunning Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Deddington on Sunday 14 September\, 7:00-9:30pm\, for an evening of great music in support of Ukraine and let the soulful sounds of jazz fill this beautiful venue as we unite in support of those affected by war. Every note played and every donation made will contribute directly towards buying\, refurbishing and delivering vehicles to Ukraine’s frontlines\, bringing heroes home\, saving lives in the field\, and bringing hope\, healing\, and critical assistance where it’s needed most. DESCRIPTION:“Cheers to Charlie” The Deddington Wine Festival is back  \n\nThis year we’ll be supporting Driving Ukraine – a Deddington-based charity that turns every pound raised into a life-saving vehicle for the front line. This incredible organisation has already delivered over 250 vehicle to Ukraine. Our ambition is to raise enough money on the night to fund two more. You’ll also have the opportunity to find out what is involved in joining one of the convoys.\n\nAs for the wine\, this year we are going ‘geographic’. Selected wines from France\, Italy\, Spain/Portugal\, Australia/NZ/SA and the Americas. We are also delighted to announce a 6th table with a selection of wines from Ukraine. A rare opportunity for you to sample wonderful wines from this beautiful country.\n\nTo raise the money we’ll need generous sponsors and auction prizes. Mead Law are the first to confirm their continued support for the event. DESCRIPTION:Book discussion with local authors Jo Eames and Linda Newbery: Deddington Library\, Thursday 20th November\, 10.30 – 12.30 \nHave you heard of Hostages to Fortune by Elizabeth Cambridge\, set in Deddington? Jo hadn’t\, in the twenty years she’d lived here\, and Linda hadn’t either until Jo told her about it. Published now by Persephone Books\, it first appeared in 1933 and is\, Jo says\, ‘a poignant account of a lost world’\, yet we’ll find much to recognise in it. Praised for its portrayal of parenthood and the realities of village life\, it’s one of the favourites of Nicola Beauman\, who set up Persephone Books\, of all the books she’s rediscovered and reissued. \nThis isn’t a book group meeting – ie you don’t need to have read the book in advance\, but we hope you’ll want to after the discussion! Of course if you have read it\, we’d love to hear your response. \nAfter discussing Hostages to Fortune\, Jo and Linda will talk briefly about their own writing and current projects\, and copies of their books will be available to buy. Come along and have an enjoyable chat over coffee.
